i3D 2010 Capstone Talk

Peter-Pike Sloan, Disney Interactive Studios

The Evolution of Precomputed Lighting for Games

Abstract:

Computing global illumination over a scene is a challenging problem in off-line rendering, let alone interactive applications. This talk will focus on two aspects of lighting in games: Precomputed lighting for static scenes and representations that enable dynamic characters to be plausibly illuminated as they move through the scene. We will discuss and contrast how techniques have evolved in both the academic literature and the games community, discussing the latter with detailed descriptions of how these two problems have been addressed by several recent titles. Finally, we will talk about the limitations of these approaches and open research problems in this area.
